Special Areas is home to the 780 megawatt Sheerness Power Generating Station, which delivers coal and natural gas fired energy to the provincial grid. 2 million acres of farm and ranch land generate nearly $2 billion of agricultural receipts for the economy. CN Rail serves the area, terminating in the town of Oyen. Highways #9, #36, and #41 connect Special Areas to Calgary, Saskatoon, Red Deer and Medicine Hat. Hanna, Oyen and Consort are the region’s primary service centers.
